Finishes that are built, not painted.

Decorative finishes Melbourne is a specialist field — and it is what Mousi does. Rather than coating a surface, our team builds it in layers of mineral plaster, lime or cement, applied by hand to a standard general painters rarely offer.

We specialise in four finishes — Venetian plaster, microcement, limewash and polished plaster — applied across feature walls, fireplaces, decorative ceilings, bathrooms, kitchens, reception areas and luxury commercial interiors. Every finish is prepared on bespoke sample boards, and every project is directly managed and quality-controlled by Mousi from consultation through completion.

We work directly with architects, interior designers, builders and developers, as well as homeowners. Decorative finishes sit alongside our residential painting and commercial painting work, and the process starts the same way: a consultation, samples, and a clear specification before any application begins.

Beyond Paint

Where a surface becomes material.

Conventional paint delivers colour across a flat plane. A decorative finish works differently — built into the wall in successive mineral layers, it introduces texture, depth and movement that shift with the light through the day.

The result is a surface with genuine material character: hand-worked, tactile and architectural. It reads as part of the building rather than a coating applied over it — which is why decorative finishes belong to the same conversation as stone, timber and concrete, not the paint tin.

01 Venetian plaster wall with a lustrous burnished sheen along a luxury Melbourne hallway — Mousi decorative finishes Melbourne
The Signature Finish Lime · Architectural · Polished
Venetian Plaster

A hand-applied, lime-based mineral finish built up in fine layers to create natural depth, movement and a soft polished sheen that shifts with the light. Made from lime and marble dust, Venetian plaster Melbourne is a true material surface rather than a coating — trowelled and burnished by hand for a finish no paint can replicate. It suits architectural feature walls, fireplaces, joinery and decorative ceilings in luxury residential and commercial interiors, and can be specified in matte, satin or high-polish using premium systems such as Giorgio Graesan. Each project begins with bespoke sample boards, reviewed in the room under its own light, so the colour, texture and sheen are confirmed before application.

02 Seamless microcement walls in a stone basin powder room — Mousi decorative finishes Melbourne
Seamless · Cement · Contemporary
Microcement

A continuous, jointless cement-based finish applied by hand across walls, floors and wet areas to create a seamless, contemporary surface with quiet depth. Microcement Melbourne is hard-wearing and water-resistant when correctly sealed, making it ideal for bathrooms, kitchens, powder rooms, reception areas and luxury commercial interiors where an uninterrupted, monolithic look is required. Because it bonds over existing substrates with minimal build-up, it can renew tired surfaces without demolition. The finish is available in a range of tones and textures, from smooth and refined to lightly mottled, and is specified on bespoke sample boards so the colour and surface character are confirmed for your space before any application begins.

03 Limewash curved balustrade with soft tonal movement in natural light — Mousi decorative finishes Melbourne
Lime · Breathable · Matte
Limewash

A mineral finish made primarily from natural lime that bonds into the surface and dries to a soft, chalky matte with gentle tonal movement. Limewash Melbourne creates a quiet, cloud-like depth that conventional paint cannot achieve, and the colour shifts subtly with the light through the day. Naturally breathable and mildly alkaline, it suits heritage and period interiors, bedrooms, living spaces and hospitality settings, and works beautifully over correctly prepared mineral substrates. We apply premium lime-based systems including Bauwerk, layered by hand for the characteristic soft variation. Colours are prepared on sample boards and reviewed in your space before application so the final tone reads exactly as intended.

04 Refined polished plaster feature wall and fireplace in a contemporary Melbourne living room — Mousi decorative finishes Melbourne
Smooth · Refined · Architectural
Polished Plaster

A smooth, refined mineral finish burnished to a controlled soft sheen with subtle stone-like depth. Polished plaster Melbourne reads as a calm, luminous surface — less reflective than a high-polish Venetian, more refined than a flat paint — and brings a quiet sense of luxury to reception areas, lobbies, feature walls and considered residential interiors. Built from lime and marble-based systems and applied in fine layers by hand, it can be specified across a spectrum of sheen levels and tones to suit the architecture. As with every Mousi finish, the surface is prepared on bespoke sample boards and reviewed under the room's own light, so the depth and sheen are confirmed before work begins.

Process & Consultation

Considered from sample to surface.

Decorative finishes reward patience. Our process is deliberately consultation-led — selecting, sampling and applying each finish in step with the architecture and the people who will live with it.

01
Consultation
We begin in conversation — understanding the space, the architecture, the light and the intent, with architects and designers or directly with homeowners.
02
Bespoke sampling
Finishes are prepared on sample boards to specification and reviewed in the room itself, where light and scale reveal the true character of each option.
03
Surface preparation
Substrate is assessed and prepared with the same rigour as the finish. A flawless decorative surface is only ever as good as the work beneath it.
04
Application & quality control
Each finish is applied in successive layers by specialist applicators, directly managed and quality-controlled by Mousi — building the surface to the depth and hand agreed at sample.

Every qualifying project is documented in a Property Passport™ — recording the finish system, materials and application for correct care and matching in years to come.

Considered Questions

On decorative finishes.

Paint is a colour applied over a wall. A decorative finish becomes the wall — built in successive layers of mineral plaster, lime or cement that develop depth, movement and tactility no paint can replicate. It is judged by hand and light as much as by the eye.
Venetian plaster is a mineral-based finish made from lime and marble dust, whereas paint is a surface coating applied over a wall. Venetian plaster creates depth, movement and texture that paint cannot replicate. Unlike many conventional paint systems, it remains naturally breathable, ages beautifully over time and can often be repaired or refreshed rather than completely replaced. For architects, designers and homeowners seeking a more refined architectural finish, Venetian plaster offers a level of material character beyond traditional paint.
Limewash is a mineral-based finish made primarily from natural lime. Unlike paint, which sits on the surface as a coating, limewash bonds into the substrate and creates soft tonal variation, depth and movement. The result is a more organic, natural appearance that changes subtly with light throughout the day.
Limewash is particularly well suited to living rooms, bedrooms, feature walls, heritage homes and architect-designed interiors where warmth, texture and character are desired. It works beautifully in both contemporary and traditional spaces and is often chosen for its soft, understated aesthetic and natural appearance.
Four signature finishes — Venetian plaster, microcement, limewash and polished plaster — each suited to different architectural intentions, substrates and environments. The right finish is chosen during consultation, on sample, and in the light of the space itself.
Yes. A significant portion of our decorative work is specified by architects and designers. We prepare bespoke sample boards to specification, advise on substrate and detailing during documentation, and manage and quality-control every application directly — using specialist applicators and trusted trade partners where required, delivered to Mousi standards.
Many can. Microcement and sealed polished plasters are well suited to bathrooms, showers and seamless wet-area surfaces when correctly specified and sealed. Suitability depends on the substrate and detailing, which is why each application is confirmed at consultation rather than assumed.
Mineral finishes are made to endure and age gracefully. Each qualifying project is documented in a Property Passport™ — recording the finish system, materials and application — so the surface can be matched, cared for and refreshed correctly for the life of the home.
